Aspiring Art Educator

Throughout my life, I have possessed an inherent desire and urge to “make”. I did not know why, and sometimes I still do not know why. I have come to believe that it is in part, divinely inspired. I have found that because I find such joy and peace in my creative process, that I want to dedicate my time and energy to sharing it. I as I work towards my Masters of Art in Teaching, my thoughts and beliefs on the importance of art, and art education are growing and evolving.

Why Art Education?

My desire to share my craft has been directly influenced by my own experience. I was fortunate to have teachers who impressed me, inspired me, encouraged me and challenged me in my artistic development. From the catharsis, the sensory components -  the colors, the textures - to the moments of sharing, introspection, and reflection, I realize that art is absolutely vital in my life. It is my goal to bring my experience and my passion together, and to give back what was given to me. I see creative exploration as paramount - particularly for young minds - while our brains are still highly plastic. I believe that we all possess "creativity", but that it manifests differently in everyone. In the education setting, I believe it is important to harness this creativity, because it is interwoven into our human experience. Humans have made art for as long as they have walked the earth. I believe that art education is of equal importance as core subjects. Visual art provides a medium for tapping into the wealth of creativity and knowledge that exists in a student's brain. I believe that imagination should be honored, and that play should be encouraged. Creativity goes far beyond the classroom; it  informs ways of thinking and being. It becomes essential for effective and successful communication, connection and growth.

Inclusive Education

As a human, I feel strongly that creativity exists within all of us. As an art educator, I believe that learning should be inclusive, accessible and empowering for all students. I believe that all students, regardless of skill or ability should be offered a space where they can thrive. I aspire to support each student's unique strengths and challenges, and I am committed to cultivating a classroom environment where the opportunity to succeed is available, possible, and tangible. Inclusivity and equal access to learning is not a separate goal, but rather the foundation for effective teaching. To me, accessibility means adapting or modifying lessons to meet a student's needs, removing barriers, and highlighting what a student can do. It's important to me that the classroom encourages collaboration, sharing, and community.
